Away. Interstate. Overseas. Over there. People love to travel and often it's a photograph that sparks a holiday or a trip. Yet, the picture-perfect postcards we see in travel brochures are often quite different to the reality once we're there.
It's not that the travel brochures are lying, it's just that our experiences are quite different. They're individual. Unique.
David Oliver and I love to travel. Over the past few years, we have travelled together, with our families and separately. We've accumulated many images that are mementos of our journeys, visual souvenirs that remind us of where we've been and what we've seen. A photographer's diary.
Our photographs are not necessarily the type you'll see in a travel brochure. Some are too real to be 'acceptable' in a marketing sense; others are too 'altered' to be honest in an advertising sense. Yet these are our experiences or our impressions.
This book brings holds some of our favourite travel photographs taken over the last few years. There's an emphasis on Australia and Italy because this is where we've been, but there are plenty of pages describing other countries as well. We've certainly left room for further books and exhibitions.
So while disparate in their subject matter and location, what links our photographs is our sight - the observations that only a photographer makes. Many readers will be familiar with our destinations, but with many years of practice, we hope we're able to present you with some new and imaginative ways of viewing the world around us.
We're not aiming for complete truth - how can a black and white photograph be described as true? We're not aiming for accuracy - our choices of images and technique are totally subjective. However, we do hope to entertain, inspire and enthuse you for what we have found on our travels away.
