When professional photographers show their work to prospective clients, they generally don’t show their bread-and-butter work, they show their best. And often their best work comes from unpaid, personally-inspired projects and photo essays. Whether advertising photographers, photojournalists or portrait photographers – all frequently create new work that is important to them.
So when Camberwell Camera Club approached its patron at the end of 2021 with an idea for something different, seasoned pro photographer Bill Bachman knew exactly what to suggest.
Explained Bill, “I have lived in Boroondara (where the club is based) for more than 40 years, spanning most of my career as a professional photographer and writer. During that time, I travelled all over Australia producing stories for a wide range of magazines, principal among them Australian Geographic, for whom I freelanced for 30 years.
“This ‘series project’, as we called it, began as a conversation among a few members interested in doing something above and beyond the usual club activities, such as themed monthly competitions and group excursions. Given my background in photojournalism, I suggested documentary-style self-assignments, culminating in a photo essay or collection of images on a particular subject or theme."
