When Scale Is Impossible To Tell

When Scale Is Impossible To Tell

Mountain and glacier, Palanderbukta, SvalbardPhase One XF 150MP, 240mm LS Schneider Krueznach, f4.5 @ 1/1250 second, ISO 100, exposure averaging for 30 seconds.  It’s hard to know exactly how big this landscape really is. Some photographers suggest including an object of known size to give a sense of scale; others like the fact that you just can’t tell, enjoying the ambiguity. Years ago in Antarctica, where the air is incredibly clear, I remember looking at a ship on the other side of the bay. It...

Fresh Snow In Ansel Adams’ Yosemite National Park

Forest Detail, Yosemite National Park, CaliforniaPhase One XF, IQ3 100MP Trichromatic, 240mm Schneider Kreuznach, f4 @ 1/1600 second, ISO 400 Sometimes you need to be careful what you wish for. Over the decades of visiting Yosemite National Park in Western USA, I’ve always wondered what it would be like in fresh snow. When you’re in the park itself, the gift shops are full of postcards (well, they used to be full of postcards, but I guess we don’t send them that much anymore), many with...

Don't Forget To Have Fun

Don't Forget To Have Fun

No photography details for the photo above - it was taken with my iPhone 15 using a medium zoom setting. And one of the most popular subjects posted on social media are photographs of food. Should we all be paying more attention to this popular genre of photography? The subject is a roast vegetable pie (I'm vegetarian), purchased from The Upper Crust pie shop at Long Reef in Sydney. The pie shop is directly opposite my studio/office and an ongoing temptation. As you can clearly see, the pie...

Description

Middlehurst is a high end photography retreat and experience for photographers who already understand how to use their camera and are ready to learn about the philosophy and aesthetics of art photography and image-making.

You don’t have to be an expert with your camera, but you should be ready to challenge yourself when it comes to creativity!

Peter Eastway and Tony Hewitt visited Middlehurst Station in June 2015 and fell in love with the location. It feels like ‘Middle Earth’ and you expect to see trolls and hobbits around every corner. So enamoured are they with Middlehurst that it has now become an annual pilgrimage.

In 2018, Peter won the AIPP Photography Book Award for his book ‘Middlehurst: Middle-Earth’, which was shot during these workshops. The judges had also fallen in love with the landscape! And you will too! And you'll also be part of the book!

The Art Photography Experience is limited to 8 participants.

It is likely to be cold outside and the weather is variable, exactly what we want.

However, the lodgings are wonderful! Built in 2019, the new ’Quarters’ feature private rooms and modern shared bathrooms. And best of all, we have our own chef - the food is nothing short of stellar!

Now, lock the ten of us away on an amazing sheep station in the remote New Zealand high country. When you stand on the top of a hill and look out as far as you can towards distant, snow-capped peaks, it’s breathtaking to realise this is all one station.

And it’s private land, so you can’t just go here by yourself. And even if you could, access to many of the locations is only by sturdy 4WDs driven by expert station hands who know the tracks, or experienced helicopter pilots who fly the area.

So, location is five stars. Food six stars! Lodgings are incredibly comfortable and now the scene is set for you to not only have a great experience, but do something with it as well: take your photography to the next level.

Don’t delay - places book up quickly.
