Julie Pallant sent me a group emaill about a subject very close to her heart.
I have created a short documentary video (4 minutes) titled Ageing: The Struggle for Independence that offers a window into the life of Helena, an 84-year-old woman who lives alone with chronic pain and limited mobility. Through a series of still images set to music, this piece captures the challenges, resilience, and grace that define her daily life.
Helena’s story is not unique — it reflects the lived experience of many older Australians whose realities are often invisible. This video forms part of an ongoing project designed to raise awareness about the struggles faced by our ageing population, especially those living with chronic illness, disability, or isolation.

Please feel free to share this video link with anyone who may be interested — individuals, organisations, community groups, or simply those who care. I would be grateful if you could help me spread the word. I'm also happy for this video or any of the individual images to be used to promote awareness, raise funds, or support campaigns focused on older people’s wellbeing — as long as it’s used respectfully and with acknowledgment. Please let me know if you wish to use this material.
And if you know of a group that might benefit from this, or if you’d like more information about the broader project, please don’t hesitate to get in touch."
If as a photographer you were wondering how you could use your skills as a visual communicator, here's a great example by one of Better Photography magazine's past contributors. It is beautifully put together with simple photographs that tell a powerful story.
Just an idea.
