Even magazine publishers are not immune to increasing costs. I can't point a finger at a war or fuel supplies, it's just that over the past 6 years, our costs have gradually crept up but we haven't increased our price for the paper version. Until now.
Four paper issues within Australia is increasing $20 to $99.80 per year, and to $139 for issues posted outside of Australia.
The price increase will only apply to paper copies - the digital price remains unchanged.
Kim did a quick audit of what it's costing us each issue and we're making a small loss at the old price, which my accountant tells me is not sustainable. And even with the new price, we make less margin on the paper copies than the online copies. Not that I'm trying to make the paper copy less attractive - I love producing a real magazine. But I need to be realistic about what it's costing us!
When I compare Better Photography to the other photo magazines, we still offer 100 pages of great content and excellent quality. And our price hasn't increased as much as petrol. Okay, so no point sugar-coating the announcement. Sorry, but we gotta do it!
