Inception And Development
Photograph by Peter Eastway. Print Size: 90x112 cm. Edition of 5.

As part of the exhibition process for No Place | No Time, held in Castello Ceconi in Italy, I wrote a series of notes to accompany the Artist Statement and thought they would make an interesting series of newsletter posts.  The accompanying print is a quick iPhone photo of the print on the wall at Castello Ceconi Art Gallery in Italy.

I'm often asked why I take photographs. It's a difficult question to answer and in trying to find an answer, I've read the responses of many artists to similar questions.

The truth is that I don't know why. I can look back on my life and see events and influences that have lead me to where I am today, but the answer to the question 'Why' remains elusive.

However, I would suggest that my process is a little different to a person who uses a camera or even an experienced photographer. I don't see myself as 'taking' photographs, rather I am 'creating' them. For me, the term 'take' is a passive exercise where you are presented with a scene or an event and you press the camera's shutter. Your only involvement is one of observer - and this is completely valid.

However, a mere capture, a straight photograph, a record picture is not enough for me, no matter how good modern technology makes our photographs. The capture process is just the beginning of a creative journey - and it is within this journey that I love to dwell. It's my happy place, listening to what I have found, exploring where I can take it. I create photographs because something inside is driving me.

To paraphrase other artists, I create photographs because I must.

The No Place | No Time exhibition by Peter Eastway and Tony Hewitt opened 4 July 2026 and will remain open at Castello Ceconi in Italy until 31 October 2026. While there is access to the castle grounds at any time, to see the exhibition inside please check the times or make an appointment.
