As part of the exhibition process for No Place | No Time, held in Castello Ceconi in Italy, I wrote a series of notes to accompany the Artist Statement and thought they would make an interesting series of newsletter posts.  The accompanying print is a quick iPhone photo of the print on the wall at Castello Ceconi Art Gallery in Italy. 

Is it important for people to love your work? 

Of course it's important to me - I hope people love my work. But let's be honest - what control do I have over what other people think?  Like all artists, I seek acclamation, but this doesn't explain what I create and hopefully it doesn't affect how I feel about my own work.

Early in my career I found that success or failure was often determined by the opinions of others. A comment or criticism could change the way I perceived my work - and often those comments were very valid. They helped me mature, first as a photographer and then as an artist.

So I have been strongly influenced by the opinions of my peers. I looked up to these people and I was happy to take their advice. Then I started to win a few awards and suddenly I found myself advising other photographers. It gave me the confidence to believe that what I was creating was 'good'.

Now add in a little ego and a few extra years. Add in social media and its ability to pass judgment. While I still search for positive acclamation, I'm confident enough to back myself. Not everyone will love everything I create, so the only person I can rely on is me.

It's experience that has brought me to this position, but in the back of my mind, I will always have those photographers who helped shape my voice and the work I produce today.
