As part of the exhibition process for No Place | No Time, held in Castello Ceconi in Italy, I wrote a series of notes to accompany the Artist Statement and thought they would make an interesting series of newsletter posts.  The accompanying print is a quick iPhone photo of the print on the wall at Castello Ceconi Art Gallery in Italy. 

What is it that makes an aerial photograph so interesting for you?

Have you ever looked down from the top of a building, from a tall mountain or out of an aircraft window? There are few people who tire of this perspective and it also explains why drones have become so popular.

Aerials involve the romance of flight and when you remove the horizon from your angle of view, the lines, shapes and colours of the landscape below can be abstracted in a manner that becomes both challenging and exciting.

I spend the majority of the time observing my life from just under two metres above ground level. It sounds obvious to suggest that a different viewpoint is attractive simply because it is different. But aerials are different and when you travel to remote locations, they are also new. Of course, as legendary Australian artist John Olsen famously said, just because something is new and different doesn't mean it is good.

Being up in the air gives all of us the opportunity to capture different angles, but for me the magic really happens when that image is tempered, burnished and moulded into an interpretation. It's this combination of capture and post-production that make the abstract aerial such a compelling language for me.

The No Place | No Time exhibition by Peter Eastway and Tony Hewitt opened 4 July 2026 and will remain open at Castello Ceconi in Italy until 31 October 2026.
