As part of the exhibition process for No Place | No Time, held in Castello Ceconi in Italy, I wrote a series of notes to accompany the Artist Statement and thought they would make an interesting series of newsletter posts.  The accompanying print is a quick iPhone photo of the print on the wall at Castello Ceconi Art Gallery in Italy. 

What are you trying to achieve with your photography?

Do I need to achieve anything more than to create an image?

I know many artists produce work to express an emotion or a higher purpose. Art can be used to foster subservience or to encourage rebellion, but my motives are not so grandiose. At the risk of aligning my work with that of the Romantic movement - because I am told that a true Romantic artist doesn't think of himself as one - I can see similarities in my approach.

I believe Romanticism was about imagination and emotion. Gaining momentum in the early 19th-century, it countered the strict regimes of the Enlightenment which focused on reason and order. Nature was revered for its unpredictability and uncontrollable power and many paintings represented man's hopeless struggle against the elements. I love the work of Turner, Constable and especially Caspar David Friedrich - artists who created images that were more than just a record of a time or a place.

Today we live in a very complicated world. It's exciting, manic and stressful, so I like to think my work can be a quiet refuge where we can enjoy colour, shape and line without an agenda. In simple terms, I feel my photographs are successful when they achieve a balance of contrasts and an image that is pleasing to the eye, an object that can be enjoyed for no other purpose.
